I do believe that I was placed in this world for a special reason and my purpose is to help those who are less fortunate than I am. I decided to start my foundation when I was almost five years old. This all came about because of a single twenty dollar bill. My story starts when I was on my way to church on a Sunday morning. When I was about to leave, my amazing grandmother gave me twenty dollars to do with whatever I wanted. In the process of going to church I was thinking about all the possible things I could buy with the money. But when we were stopped at a red light that was the moment when I saw the homeless, hungry man who changed my life forever. I saw him and I knew I had to give him my twenty dollars. Not only was it for a good cause but it would help him in whatever way it could. I knew then, that this is what I had to do in life. Then on another day I was watching television and there was an info-commercial about Feed The Children Foundation. That’s when I had the vision of what exactly I needed to do in life. I needed to help people. Now I had to answer the how; How could I help?….. I thought for a while, then it came to me. I had to help by giving food, the one basic necessity of life. I told my two aunts about my idea of helping the needy; although they came on board to help, they kind of ignored me so I had to fire them. Then I went to my mom to help, she didn’t at first but with constant nagging she ultimately agreed. She also didn’t take me seriously until she realized that I was very serious about my vision.
After realizing I was really serious about my vision, she agreed to help. Then all my family started to help and contribute. At first we were giving hot food that we cooked to the homeless every Saturday. Then we were told we could not do that, so we stopped. Then I had to think of something bigger, better, and easier. I came up with the idea of a food distribution, where we would have families, who are less fortunate, come by and get a bag full with essential foods and exit; Simple right? So we started, our first distribution was a big accomplishment. We helped 300 families who left with a bag full of a week’s worth of groceries. We did this monthly for two years then after two years we became a foundation, I called it Joshua’s Heart Foundation. Why, because I felt like I was putting my heart into my mission. Currently we help young people every Friday in a food backpack program, families every month in a large food distribution and quarterly with a cooking demonstration to show families how to cook easy, tasty and nutritious meals. We feed 20-60 youths every Friday and an average of 150 families per month.
We started a Junior Advisory Board (JAB) where kids and teens between the ages of 11 and 18 talk about ideas, programs and events for the foundation to do. We have elves which are youths who assist in spreading the mission of the foundation and helping us to stomp out hunger.
I care about hunger because it is my purpose in life to come up with a solution to world hunger. Hunger is a huge global problem and I believe that I am supposed to help those who are in need by giving them food. I believe that everyone has a purpose in life, my purpose is given by God. My purpose was given to me by God and I believe my mission in life is to help those who are less fortunate. I think that one can either follow their purpose or live a non-purposeful life. Your purpose is also your vision of life for the future, your passion in life, your calling in life. Your purpose is usually what you love to do, what you are good at or what just feels right. You should always follow your purpose in life. Sometimes it may seem like there are a lot of bumps in the road but if you follow your purpose, no matter what happens, you will be happy. If you just believe in what you are doing you can succeed. There is a famous saying that goes “Do what you love and love what you do”. I care not only about giving food but helping people in general.
I never understood why people are hungry, Food is one of the basic necessities of Life and it truly breaks my heart to know that children are hungry; it breaks my heart to know that people are hungry. Why are people hungry? I want to find ways to prevent this. There are some basic things in life that we all need to survive and food is one of them. In the United states 1 out of 6 children go hungry daily. I cannot imagine not having food to eat when I need it, can you? If we all work at this we can make a huge “dent” in hunger, we can stomp it out. Hunger comes in different colors, shapes and sizes. No one knows when they may be the one in need. We are a rich country; as a nation and globally we can all make this better. If I had not seen the ad on TV I would not have known there were hungry children or people in the world. Not everyone will be rich, not everyone will be a Nobel prize winner, not everyone will be a speaker, not everyone will get all “A’s”, but no one should go hungry! We can all help our neighbors; we can all give a little more. We can help. Imagine if the billions of people who live in the world give $1 or more monthly towards providing food for the millions who are hungry. Imagine if we all came together, we can really end hunger. Imagine if we each adopt a family and help them when they need us most. Imagine what we can do as a nation, as a world working towards this one goal.
I care because:-
No one should be hungry!
This should not be happening!
A child should not die because they are hungry!
If a parent cannot feed their children, they should not go to bed hungry!
We waste too much food on a daily basis!
I know together we can make a change!
So many young people grow up having no idea of what goes on outside their world or that we can make a difference. We can help our neighbors and strangers too!. There are families out there who just need a little help, families who are fighting to survive. Imagine the world we would create if we all help one another!
I want to make a big change. I want others to help me to make big change in hunger. We can do it. We can start small and that small change will eventually make a huge change so that hunger will be no more!
Imagine that…….a world without hunger, NICE!
